Our Mission

We are the premier organization of African-American-owned CPA and Financial Services firms who empower, educate and advocate for the accounting profession to ensure innovation, mentorship, relevancy and continued value.

History

In 1986, Ramona Pearson, CPA, the first female chairman of the National Association of Black Accountants, established the Division of Firms. The first chairman of DOF was Walter Davis, CPA.

In 2014, DOF began to take steps to become an independent organization:

  • In 2014, DOF deployed a “value proposition” survey to determine firm interest in continuing the organization, the results of which yielded an overwhelming affirmation that the organization is relevant.
  • In 2015, DOF applied for and received status from the IRS as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and conducted the historic “Game On!” — a strategic planning meeting in Houston that attracted 30 firms and commenced a two-year strategic planning process.
  • In 2016, DOF members elected new officers and established a board of directors.
  • At the June 2017 annual meeting, DOF adopted its mission statement: We are the premier organization of Black-owned CPA firms who empower, educate and advocate for the accounting profession to ensure innovation, mentorship, relevancy and continued value.
  • In 2018, DOF revised its bylaws to expand membership to Black-owned firms providing financial services.
  • In July 2020, members voted to change the name of the organization to the Diverse Organization of Firms.
